You don't need to add any wax in the straight hair right at the roots. This is because the hair right at the roots is always un-knotted. (also referred to as new growth) Straight hair needs to be knotted before the wax can help it compress and tighten into dreads. Keeping the hair at the roots clean and dry and free of soap residues will help it knot when you clockwise rub. After it's knotted and feels puffy you can add a tiny bit of wax and palm roll it to get it to compress and start locking.
